Cartier Watch

The history of Cartier watch making began in Paris in 1847 when Louis-Francois Cartier bought the jewelry workshop where he had learned his early craft. This marked the birth of Maison Cartier.

Louis-Francois Cartier, who wanted to establish his family in business soon taught his son Louis - Francois Alfred the trade and handed over management to him in 1874. Alfred in turn inaugurated his son, Louis into the business as well and made him a partner in 1898.

In 1899 Alfred entrusted his three sons with the international future of Cartier. Two generations later, Cartier stood out as the most prestigious jeweler in the world. Maison Cartier grew, thanks to royal patronage and was hailed by the Prince of Wales as "Jeweller to Kings, King of Jewellers".

The very first watches appearing in the House of Cartier archives as early as 1853 included the classic fob watch. In the 1890s, Cartier was supplied by some of the biggest names in watch making at the time, including Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin. Similarly the master watchmakers Bredillard, Dragonneau and Prevost freely provided Cartier with their own clock and watch movements.

The designs of the Cartier brothers were very popular throughout Europe, even amongst royalty. In 1909 Cartier officially came to America, opening on the prestigious Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York. The store is still in the same location.
